🔄 Substitutions
Sausage- We use breakfast sausage for these sausage balls but you can use pretty much any ground pork sausage. Hot sausage or Italian sausage are both great if you like a little extra spice! If you can't find bulk sausage you can use sausage links with the casing removed.
Cheese- While sharp cheddar is a classic flavor in these tasty appetizers you can use different varieties of cheese if you'd like. Mild cheddar or Monterey jack add a more mild flavor or you can use pepper jack for a little spice.
🔪 How to make Sausage and Cheese Balls
First pre heat oven to 350 and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Using a food processor or box grater shred your cheese.
Place the shredded cheese, garlic powder, chives and sausage in a large mixing bowl and stir well. The best way to do this is with a wooden spoon. If you prefer to use a mixer place the ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. You can also use your hands.
Add the Bisquick to the sausage mixture and continue mixing. Add milk gradually, only adding enough to make sure that there is no dry Bisquick in the mixture.
Using a dough scoop or spoon scoop about 1 tablespoon at a time and roll into 1-inch balls.
Place balls onto the prepared baking sheet 1-2 inches apart.
Place in your preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack. Serve warm.
❄️ Make Ahead Tips
To freeze these sausage balls-
After forming the balls and placing on a large baking sheet, place the uncooked sausage balls in the freezer until frozen. Remove the frozen balls from the baking sheet and place in an airtight container. When ready to bake remove them from the freezer, defrost, and bake according to the package directions. Or place them frozen on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes at 350.
