    • 1 Cup Butter - you can use salted or unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
    • 1 ½ Cup Packed Brown Sugar
    • ½ Cup White Sugar
    • 2 tsp. Vanilla Extract
    • 3 Eggs
    • 3 Cups Flour
    • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
    • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
    • 1 teaspoon Salt
    • 2 Cups Red, White & Blue M&M's (divided)
    • 2 Cups Chocolate Chips- You can use milk chocolate chips or semi sweet.

🔪 How to make these Patriotic Cookie Bars

    1. First preheat your oven to 350 and line a baking sheet (make sure it is a jelly roll style baking sheet with edges all around) with parchment paper. Butter the parchment and sides of the pan, this will keep the cookies from sticking.
    2. Next the bowl of an electric stand mixer, or in a large bowl add the butter and sugars. Mix with a paddle attachment, or an electric mixer until well blended and light and fluffy.
    3. Then add in the vanilla extract and the eggs, continue mixing until well incorporated.
    4. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, whisk until well mixed.
    5. Add the dry ingredients gradually into the wet ingredients mixing well after each addition. Once the flour mixture is all incorporated you should have a thick cookie dough.
    6. Now add in chocolate chips and one cup of the M&M's fold in by hand with a spatula or wooden spoon until evenly distributed.
    7. Using a spatula or buttered hands spread the dough evenly into your prepared pan.
    8. Sprinkle reserved 1 cup of M&M's across the entire surface of the cookie dough.
    9. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
    10. Allow to cool completely on a cooling rack before cutting into 24 squares with a sharp thin knife.

    ❄️ Storage Tips

These cookie bars are great for making ahead because they store really well. The best way to store them in an air tight container or zip top bag. They keep well for several days as long as they are kept sealed.

📝 Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:

Can I use white chocolate chips?

Absolutely! You can make these patriotic M&M's cookie bars with any chocolate chips you'd like! White chocolate chips compliment the red white and blue color scheme well and they taste delicious!

What size pan should I use?

The cooking time of these easy cookie bars can vary depending on the size of your baking sheet. A standard size half sheet pan works well, they are 13x18 inches. However if you have a slightly smaller baking sheet that works too your cookie bars will be just a little bit thicker and take longer to bake. Make sure to keep an eye on the cookie bars as they bake so they don't over cook.
