Substitution Ideas
- Bacon - Swap with turkey bacon or omit for a vegetarian version (just sauté the onions in olive oil or butter).
- Dijon Mustard - Use yellow mustard or spicy brown mustard for a different flavor twist.
- Apple Pie Filling - Replace with diced fresh apples sautéed in a little butter and brown sugar, or try canned spiced apples.
- Barbecue Sauce - Use honey BBQ, spicy BBQ, or even a smoky chipotle version to match your taste.
- Baked Beans - Any variety works! Try maple, hickory-smoked, or vegetarian beans depending on your preference.
- Brown Sugar - Can be swapped for maple syrup or honey for a slightly different sweetness.

How to make apple pie baked beans

- Preheat the oven to 350
- Dice the bacon into small pieces. Cook in a medium size skillet over medium heat until the bacon pieces are crispy. Remove from the skillet to a paper towel lined plate to drain. Leave the bacon drippings in the pan.

- Add the diced onion into the skillet with the bacon drippings. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently for about 10 minutes or until translucent.
- Add in the diced garlic and continue cooking for about 5 more minutes or until the garlic is fragrant. Remove from heat.

- Place the apple pie filling in a medium size bowl and coarsely chop the apple pieces. I used a fork to hold the pieces still and cut them with a sharp knife. You can make large or small chunks depending on your preference.
- Place the two cans of baked beans in a large mixing bowl, add in the cooked drained bacon, cooked onions and garlic, chopped apple pie filling, brown sugar, barbecue sauce, mustard and smoked paprika. Stir until everything is well incorporated.

- Spread the bean mixture evenly in a 9x13 baking dish.
- Place in the oven and bake for 45-55 minutes.

Storage Tips
- Refrigerator - Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop until warmed through.
- Freezer - Cool completely, then transfer to a freezer-safe container or resealable bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.
- To Reheat from Frozen - Thaw overnight in the fridge, then reheat in a baking dish at 350°F for about 20-25 minutes or until heated through.
- Make Ahead - Assemble everything (uncooked) and store in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. Perfect for planning ahead!
Frequently asked questions, answers and tips:
Yes! After cooking the bacon, onions, and garlic, combine everything in your slow cooker. Cook on low for 4-5 hours or high for 2-3 hours until hot and bubbly. It's a great option for potlucks or when you don't want to heat up the oven.
Not at all. The sweetness from the apple pie filling is balanced by the smoky bacon, tangy mustard, and savory baked beans. If you prefer less sweetness, you can reduce the amount of brown sugar or choose a tangier BBQ sauce.
Tips
- Customize the beans - Use your favorite flavor of baked beans or barbecue sauce to make it your own.
- More bacon? Yes, please. You can cook extra bacon and sprinkle it on top before baking for a crispy finish.
- Adjust the apple chunks - Chop the apples small for more even flavor, or leave them in big slices if you want noticeable bites of apple.
- Swap the mustard - Dijon adds tang, but brown or yellow mustard work too!
- Control the texture - Bake less for saucier beans (about 35 minutes), or bake the full 55 for a thicker, more caramelized dish.
- Make-ahead friendly - Assemble the dish in advance and bake just before serving.
